Be the Business is a joint venture between government and big business, set up to investigate the best ways to make improvements in leadership and management capability within small and medium sized firms in the UK.

Delivered in partnership with regional networks, chambers and leading businesses, the Be the Business Family Business programme provides opportunities for comparison (using our free online benchmarking tool or by visiting other companies), collaboration (through joining a peer learning group) and gaining expert advice (through an advisory board or mentor).

Business leaders can choose which of the activities they are interested in from a range including:

  • Business placements
  • Advisory boards
  • Peer learning
  • Open business day visits
  • Mentoring
  • Online Benchmarking Tool

In this initial pilot, there is no cost to businesses for taking part, and commitment can vary from a few hours to several days over the course of a year.

Who is it for?

The programme is for leaders and managers from small and medium family owned businesses, regardless of sector. It is most suitable for businesses with 9 or more employees.

How does it work?

Information will be shared with delivery partners, who will make contact to co-ordinate the next steps. For example, businesses wanting to take part in a Business Placement will be asked about their interests and expectations in order to find a suitable placement.
